Library Information Specialist / Librarian

With offices located in downtown Montreal, this firm, recognized as one of Canada's best employers in terms of diversity, is looking for a library information specialist.

As a member of the library services team, the library information specialist assists with digital database projects and helps expand the content of the firm's intranet site on ATHENA. The incumbent will also be required to participate in knowledge management projects, confirm references through online resources, handle billing, conduct media monitoring and coordinate training programs. As the use of new media technologies for monitoring purposes is an important part of the position, the incumbent must therefore demonstrate an interest and affinity for technology projects associated with library services.


-Support the design and maintenance of the databases composing the infrastructure of the libraries of the Montreal and Quebec City offices using SyrsiDynix

- Provide support to the research librarian as required in confirming references using QL/Lexis, Westlaw Canada, The Reference and Azimut

- Invoice time spent on research based on knowledge and experience

- Take care of media content monitoring, monitoring services and alert services for practice groups

- Coordinate training within the firm on certain online resources for lawyers and staff in the Montreal and Quebec City offices

- Assist the library team in developing and maintaining user guides

- Provide password support and resolve digital access issues for the Montreal and Quebec City offices

- Take over as needed to provide an overview of library services to staff members in the Montreal and Quebec City offices

References and research

- As a member of the library services team in Quebec, offer support in the processing of requests for the provision of references and the provision of research and information services received from the firm's professionals and respond to them using multimedia and multi-format resources under the guidance of the Director of Library Services and the Research Librarian

- Collect jurisprudential sources and decisions

- Coordinate loans between libraries

Technical services and infrastructure

- Participate in projects related to specialized databases, including catalogs and infrastructure

- Collaborate in the administration and maintenance of Onelog

- Collaborate, as needed, in knowledge management projects by consulting the site dedicated to knowledge management

- Inventory all documents and take care of the acquisition of library documents for the Montreal and Quebec City offices

Media monitoring and new technologies

- Manage new media services and explore new media technologies such as blogs, RSS feeds and other emerging technologies

- Coordinate with the library services team efforts to promote new technologies to professionals

Library maintenance

- Be responsible for circulating library materials and storing them on the shelves and carrying out maintenance of the premises if necessary

Skills and requirements

- Information technician diploma plus 2-5 years experience in a law library setting

- Critical thinking and skills in databases and technologies

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

- Knowledge of printed and online legal collections, some skills in legal research

- Commitment to serving customers well and superior work ethic

- Time management, organizational and problem-solving skills

- Autonomy

- Strong spirit of initiative
